MapWarper, developed by Tim Waters for the New York Public Library, has been adjusted to the Wikimedia environment. The tool lets users take scanned maps and place them in world coordinates.
Any image in Wikimedia Commons can be submitted for georeferencing when the Map template is inserted in the file page.
In 2016, Wikimaps Warper API was refactored. It is now possible to use Wikimaps Warper from external applications, or create an app in Wikimedia Commons that uses it.
